THE LOCATION

A living exploration into bamboo, wild nature & community.

Ekawa is a bamboo village and living lab located in the rainforest near San Carlos, Colombia.

The project is centered on regenerating native bamboo ecosystems. A few decades ago, this land held over 50 hectares of bamboo — today only a portion remains. Ekawa is actively restoring these groves through planting, propagation, and long-term stewardship. Bamboo is used throughout the space, from construction to crafts. Buildings are made with locally sourced materials, and ongoing work includes planting, harvesting, and building with bamboo.

The name Ekawa comes from a bird call that the founders, Sergio and Elle, frequently heard when they first arrived on the land. To them, it sounded like "E-ka-wa." They later discovered it belonged to the Laughing Falcon, locally known as the Waikuru. They also noticed that EKAWA spelled backward is AWAKE, which resonated with their vision of exploring new ways of living in connection with nature.

The setup is simple and practical. Water comes from springs on the land, waste is composted and reused, and part of the food is grown on-site using agroforestry and organic practices. A small community of four families, volunteers and guests lives on the land, co-creating what they call the Bamboo Village. Daily life includes shared meals, working on the land, and maintaining the space together.

Ekawa is a partner location of Nomad Farm, where we hosted a month-long Soilmates Immersion in October 2026. Beyond our scheduled group immersions, Ekawa is also part of our Eco-Living network, open for year-round flexible stays, welcoming remote workers and travelers who want to experience community living while continuing their own routines.

We chose to partner with Ekawa because regeneration is embedded in how the place is designed and operated. From the land to the materials to the way people live together. It offers a setting to explore regenerative living in a practical and embodied way.
