ABOUT AKAL

a holistic community and permaculture project located in the north of Tenerife in the Canary Islands

The retreat takes place at Akal, a holistic community and regenerative food forest located in the northern hills of Tenerife, one of Spain’s Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa.

The space is built around principles of plant-based living, ecological regeneration, yoga, and conscious community life. The land hosts a growing tropical food forest where papaya, banana, avocado, mango, guava, and passion fruit trees grow alongside vegetables, herbs, and native plants in a regenerative ecosystem.

Food and land stewardship are central to life at Akal. Ingredients come directly from the garden or from nearby local farmers and island markets. Meals are plant-based and prepared with whole foods that reflect both the island’s tropical agriculture and the community’s values around conscious nutrition. Akal is also a stimulant-free and digital-light environment, creating the conditions for our nervous systems to slow down and people to find balance.

The retreat is located in the north of Tenerife, a part of the island known for its fertile volcanic landscapes and slower rhythm of life. While the south is known for resorts and dry terrain, the north is greener and richer in biodiversity thanks to Atlantic trade winds and volcanic soil.

The region is home to tropical valleys, banana terraces, natural lava pools, coastal cliffs, and dense forests, including the ancient Anaga Biosphere Reserve, one of the oldest laurel forests in the world. During the retreat, afternoons or weekends offer opportunities to explore the island — from black sand beaches and forest hikes to natural pools and nearby villages, all within short distance from Akal.
